New Delhi: Artificial intelligence could lift global growth by nearly 0.8 per cent and help India achieve its Viksit Bharat ambition, but it also poses high risks to jobs, inequality and financial stability, IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said on Friday.
Speaking at the AI Impact Summit 2026, Georgieva said AI could accelerate growth beyond pre-COVID levels, creating new opportunities and productivity gains, especially for countries that invest early in digital infrastructure, skills and adoption.
“AI can lift global growth by almost a percentage point. For India, this magnitude makes Viksit Bharat achievable,” she said, while cautioning that the technology must be managed as a force for good, not evil.
Describing the labour impact as a “tsunami”, she said 40 per cent of jobs globally will be affected by AI, either enhanced or eliminated. In advanced economies, the figure could rise to 60 per cent, unfolding over a relatively short period.
